The second installment of the 2018 NYC Pool Series took place at Owl’s head skatepark, put together by the NYC Skate Coalition. The first event took place at Chelsea Piers 62 on July 14 with the third installment at Riverside skatepark left to be announced. It was a pretty raw session for a skate contest. The jam format saw 540s, inverts, airs and Rey Tapley dropping people’s jaws by airing out to a backside boneless on the wall from the shallow end.

Skateboarding is, by and large, a solitary battle. But skating a pool is, most certainly, a communal experience. Pool side is a magic place where camaraderie brews, conversations flows, and ideas born out of skate air.

That’s exactly how NYC Pool Series came about. It was during a random session at Chelsea Piers that Ian Clark (NYC Skateboard Coalition), Jon Nicholson (also known as DJ Pork Chop), and Ali Axelrod came up with the idea to do a series of pool skating events for the locals, making a day for homegrown rippers.

Clark and Axelrod, both veteran organizers, have been cooking up local skate events since 2013. It all started with Riverside Skatepark Jam.

“Irene Ching and I came up with the competition format. That format stayed very much the same throughout the years,” said Ian.

But this year at Owl’s head, the format is evolving: three categories — under 30, over 30, and woman, competed in a skate jam format: no dedicated runs. The jam format really brought the focus closer to community rather than a competition. Snaking was surprisingly kept to a minimum and everyone was able to have a good day hanging out in the final days of the Summer.
