Harold Ickes Playground in Red Hook Brooklyn is undergoing planning to have a new cement skate park built by 2021. The .7 acre space has been approved by Brooklyn Community Board 6 with a budget of around  $3-5 million to cover the skate park and surrounding amenities (climbing boulders, park seating, game tables and decorative landscaping).

The design has stirred up some concerns, notably from Steve Rodriguez who designed LES/Coleman skate park calling out the congested design and potentially dangerous flow. “I just don’t think the designers had the end users of NYC in mind and like Canarsie and some other prefab parks in NYC the designs are frustrating and disappointing” said Steve after reviewing the design.

Fortunately construction has not begun yet so there’s potentially time to have them work with the community towards a better design.
